HISTORY

Hot Tamale & the Red Hots first met in September of 2004.  Cindy Grill moved to the Des Moines area about 18 months earlier, and had been looking for a full-time band.  At the time we were thinking about starting up another blues band, however, we needed a vocalist.  What luck!  The rest, as they say, is history.

Since January 2005, Hot Tamale & the Red Hots have been surprising blues music fans.  To date, they have opened for such national acts as Kelley Hunt, Grinderswitch, Harper, and Dr. John, as well as performing at such events as the Bowlful of Blues festival and Rollin On The River festival.  Keep watching to see what they do next!

Why Should I See Hot Tamale & The Red Hots?

If you want to be entertained, hear great music and meet some one-of-a-kind people, you must see this band!  Their energy both on stage and off is second to none!

Lead vocalist, Cindy Grill, has been singing professionally for 30+ years.  She has a dynamic range and the soul of a true blues vocalist.  She follows the long line of great female blues vocalists not only in talent but in showmanship as well.  Cindy is not only extremely talented but also one of the most sincere people you will meet, always smiling and taking time for her fans.  She will get you up on your feet dancing, and she may even join you.  She's one-in-a-million!

Guitarist and vocalist, Dave "Bonedaddy" Jenks, has been musically inclined from a very young age, when he was influenced by the music of Fats Domino, Ray Charles, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Bobby Bland, and James Brown. By the time he was in Junior High School he was singing in garage and basement rock bands with his brother on guitar.Years later David took up the guitar himself, and is primarily self taught. Dave is also known for his sax playing in other groups. Besides the influences already mentioned, his guitar influences include Oscar Moore, T-Bone Walker, Les Paul, Johnny "guitar" Watson, Duane Allman, Freddie King, Peter Green, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Billy Gibbons, Carlos Santana, and Robben Ford. Dave has been a member of several bands over the years including Destiny, Presence, Ernest T. And The Wildcats, Bonedaddy, T-Bone's Rhythm & Blues Revue, Scotty And The Wingtips, and Brother T-Bone Groove. Dave is a lover of tone, soul, and all the good grooves!

Kevin Bodtke, another founding member, lends the true blues soul with his harmonica.  Kevin has a unique style of blues in this area.  Kevin can truly use his "harp" to lay down a rhythm, such as many of the old greats (Sonny Boy, Little Walter, etc.).  This gives the music a fuller sound that lets you know you're hearing the blues!

Our drummer, Bobby Cassady, is no stranger to the Des Moines blues scene.  Bobby has played with probably every musician in this town at one time or another.  He even played with Fat Package and they won the 1998 Iowa Blues Challenge and then went on to compete in Memphis at the International Blues Challenge.  Bobby loves the blues and we love him!

Robert Bayse handles bass duties with Hot Tamale.   Reuniting  the award winning rhythm section  that won the Iowa Blues Challenge in 1998. Robert takes his role as a side man very seriously laying down the solid lines the blues was built on.  Robert joined the band in January of 2010.

So, that's it!  Now that you know a little bit about the band, you must come out and meet them.  These are some of the best people I know and I love working with them!
